RHI Radio 2012
We are Red Hook Radio, a youth produced radio station. Our mission is to create change by reflecting the Red Hook community voice. Through this program we give young adults the opportunity to express their ideas and opinions based on influences, challenges and experiences they face in their communities. We are determined to inform the Red Hook community and all other communities from the perspectives of young adults about issues we all face in our neighborhoods. With this motivation, we plan to educate by sharing our knowledge through training and by providing a vehicle for communication.

Charlene Pratt

Hello I am Charlene Pratt. I have been working at the Red Hook Initiative for 4 years. I came in to the Red Hook Initiative through Mirrors of Strength with Deanna Cherry when I was 14 years old. I then started out working as a Peer Health Educator in which we learned about the reproductive system and contraception. We went out and did workshops teaching middle schoolers about puberty and the changes of their body. I also worked with Tanya Wilson and Anna Ortega as a Peer Counselor. While I was a Peer Counselor I also did workshops at The Red Hook Justice Center. Over this summer I worked on a project with a group called The PAR project. The PAR project was about people's sex lives. We went out to the park on Paradise Classics and asked people to take our surveys. We got 75 surveys. After all our hard work we had a mini event and spoke about the work we've done and did a little skit. Now I am with the radio program blogging on the website, interviewing and putting it on GarageBand. We even got to make our own playlist and express ourselves with songs on our own theme with our own meaning.
Jocelyn Rivera

My name is Jocelyn Rivera. I'm 16 years old and a junior at Bishop Ford Central Catholic High School. I have been a part of the RHI for about 7 years. I started as a part of the Almost Teens Group where I grew into a young teen girl. I progressed to the Mirrors of Strength girls group where I got through the end of middle school and on to the start of high school, later to become a Peer Health Educator where I learned about pregnancies, STD's, STI's and much more. I am now a RHI Radio intern. I really enjoy this group because I learn about a lot of different social issues that affect not only me but tons of other teens all over my community and others around it. What I love most about working at the RHI is that unlike other places that I've worked (such as the Brooklyn Botanic Garden in Crown Heights or the Youth Advisory Board in Manhattan) its so close to home and I feel like I'm making a direct and powerful difference to better the place I live. I hope to make strides in this program and empower many teens like me.
Nykia Williams
Hello, my name is Nykia Williams & I am a radio intern at RHI. I am a junior at Cobble Hill High School. I have been with the RHI for 2 years now. I started out as a Youth Leader then was promoted to become a Peer Health Educator. The PHE's went to a Sister Song Conference in Miami, Florida and we met other youth groups who do almost the same thing as the PHE's from RHI. In the summer of 2011, I also was a part of the PAR Project, which was the Participatory Action Research Project. In this project we interviewed people that live in the Red Hook Area about their first sexual experiences. Then we did anonymous surveys to find out about different peoples sexual orientation. I think that the RHI has been a good first job experience for me.
Tabitha Roman
My name is Tabitha Roman and I am 17 years old and I am a junior at Fort Hamilton High School. I am planning on going to college for Veterinary Medicine and or Zoology right after I graduate. My love for animals has always been amazing since the day I first had a pet. I have been working at the RHI for 2 years now and each day is a different experience. I started as a PHE and moved on from there. I now work as a radio intern with other youth at the job. This job has allowed me to experience new things and meet new people. One of my favorite experiences with the RHI was when a group of young female youth and I went to Miami. We went there to go to a HUGE conference that revolved around sexual health. It was a great trip to be a part of and I would do it again if I had the chance.
