Community Development

Community Change Workers (CCWs)

RHI employs seven Community Change Workers (CCWs) who are working to improve the neighborhood by mobilizing and educating the residents of the Red Hook Houses. In 2009, the CCWs successfully ran a "bus campaign" to stop proposed MTA cuts of our local buses. They collected over 600 signed petitions. They also mobilized a direct action around a proposed cement factory, and received over 500 signed petitions to interrupt the process (to date it is still not open). In 2010, the CCW's are doing Census Outreach, working to protect public housing, organizing around transportation issues and building a stronger community base.
• Wednesdays, 5:00 - 7:00pm. Community meetings once per month.

RHI Radio

RHI Radio is a youth-run, on-line radio station. Young people learn the history of radio, develop technical skills, and learn how to conduct interviews. They then use these skills to create their own radio programs. This project gives a voice for young people to express and share their ideas and views of the issues that impact their lives. To listen to their work: RHI Radio.
• RHI Radio will re-start in Summer 2010.

Community Nursing Project

RHI manages a linkage agreement between LIU School of Nursing and eight groups within the Red Hook community. Each semester nursing students volunteer "community health" hours to agencies in the Red Hook community. Students conduct health assessments, create new health protocols, provide education, and work with partner organizations to improve wellness. Each semester 560 hours are donated toward improving public health in Red Hook.
• Spring and Fall semesters, Thursdays, 8:30am - 2:30pm.

Red Hook Passport to Summer

Passport to Summer is a community-wide adventure in fitness and nutrition. Participants sign up for a Passport, then travel throughout the neighborhood collecting stamps when they complete a health, fitness, or nutrition activity. Once an individual collects 8 stamps from at least two local organizations, they are eligible for an award. RHI is the lead agency and is supported by eight participating groups.
• June through August.

Red Hook Resource Exchange

RHI plays an active role in the RHRE. This collaboration among community-based organizations, schools, churches, and associations in Red Hook works to create a connected community of service providers who, in partnership with residents, achieve for Red Hook what could not be done alone. We imagine a Red Hook: where the name does not carry a stigma, but a message of promise; where young people can be successful; where needs are met and gaps in services are addressed; and where providers work together.
